Celia Berk: You Can’t Rush Spring

Here’s a singer with a smart delivery and even wiser selection of material. Celia Berk has a relaxed and assured sort of Broadway Musical kind of voice, so she selects material that work well with shows, giving them a jazzier feel than expected. She cuts and pastes with a team of musicians that create atmospheres ranging from Cabaret to romantic soul, with a gentle and mature vibrato that draws you into material that goes from  the lazy samba “I’ve Been Waiting All My Life” to the melancholy “It’s The Strangest Thing.” She gets relaxed and casual on a graceful “The Folks Who Live On The Hill” and with some old world piano and violin, gets sentimental on Stephen Sondheim’s “Sand.” Even on the show-tuney pieces like “The Broken Record” and “You’re All The World to Me” she never overplays her hand, and shows her attraction in being the sadder but wiser girl, which has always been for me.
