Margie Baker: Sings with So Many Stars

At 81, Margie Baker has released only 4 albums, but it’s always better late than never. This godly lady has an earthy and vibrant voice, and an old school style that emphasizes presentation, class and interpretation over clinical sounds. She mixes and matches musicians which include Keith Williams/p, Harley White/b, John Santos/perc, Jerry Pannone/dr and Chuck Bennett/b through jazz, bop, standards, bossa nova and, of course, the blues.

She sounds delightfully mysterious on “Senor Blues” just as she delivers punctuated rhythms over percussion on a perky “Deed I Do.” A take of “I Want a Little Boy” is playful, and Baker displays her bop chops on “Mood for Mr. Moody.” Her faith is exhibited on a gloriously reflective take of “Come Sunday,” and in this time of histrionics without any background support, it’s encouraging to see an old soul sing with REAL soul.
