Marc Ribot Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard

Guitarist experimenter Marc Ribot goes inside and out on this trio session with Chad Taylor/dr and longtime avant gardist Henry  Grimes/b at a searing session at the Village Vanguard. Of the six songs, two are by Coltrane, and two by Ayler; any questions?

Grimes’ bowed bass segues into some hard hitting and thrashing drumming along with Ribot’s rocking guitar on the 15 minute “Dearly Beloved” while rapid fire ride cymbals feed Ribot’s fire on the V8 “Sun Ship.” Some Chuck Berry riffs and rockabilly are picked by Ribot while Grimes delivers a crescendo of bass on Ayler’s “The Wizard” and waves of sound crash and swell on the 19 minute “Bells.” Some cozy back porch picking brings a breather on “I’m Confessin’” and a spacious “Old Man River” includes some marvelous interplay between guitar and bass. Definitely bring your Coreg to this gig!
