Trumpeter David Weiss has been building an impressive catalogue lately. Here, he re-assembles his sextet of Marcus Strickland/ts, Myron Walden/as, Xavier Davis/p, Dwayne Burno/b and EJ Strickland/dr for a cooking collection of forward looking post bop pieces.
Weiss’ tone is still crystal clear, and it glows like a morning sunrise on the thoughtful “Passage Into Eternity” and the minor blues “When Words Fail.” The harmonies of the three horn front line is tapioca rich, with some glorious agonizing during the long tones on “Wayward” and “Loss.” Steady medium tempos pieces such as “The Intrepid Hub” keep you alert with the tricky turns, while the Eye of the Hurricane-inspired “White Magic” has the rhythm team charge like stallions. Guest Ben Eunsen’s guitar livens up “MJ” while Strickland’s thick tenor is a plus on “Wayard” and Walden cries on “Lullaby for a Lonely Child.” As solid a 25 dollar gold piece from the 19th Century.
