Tenor and alto saxist Andrew Rathbun leads a quartet with Phil Markowizt/p, Jay Anderson and Bill Stewart/dr through a collection of gentle and pensive originals. Trumpeter Taylor Haskins joins in on a couple pieces such as the laconic “Counterpoint” and the eerie “Again?” but for the most part, Rathbun’s thick tenor and inquisitive alto lad through pieces such as the sinister “Bad Company” and the prismatic “Sleep Please.” Markowitz’ piano chimes gently on “Tears and Fears” and is fragrant on the reflectively cheerful “Sleep Please.”
