With the back of his album resembling a classic Blue Note sleeve, guitarist Michael Blum delivers a vintage collection of standards and originals that encompasses all of the high qualities of the venerable label on his own session. Don Moio/dr, Brad Smith/p and Jim Stinnett/b team up with the leader on bossas such as “When Sunny Gets Blue” and “Corcovado,” while some bluesy notes are bent on the bassist’s “Yellow Alert.” Blum himself displays a graceful touch as on”Rebecca” and is love with triplets on the tensile “Castle Rock” and the gently driving “Brown A ve.” The unison lines on the latter with Smith, as well as on “High Summer” show some remarkable alacrity, while the guitarist’s patience on the evocative “A Child Is Born” allows the song to undulate like a tulip.
