Tohpati brought comparisons to Jeff Beck when he put out Riot back in 2012, and this time out he’s re-loaded his six shooter with Jikmmy Haslip/b and Chad Wackerman/dr to put out a power trio that riffs into cosmic space with joy.
If you want more chops than a Vege-Matic, just check out the hard driving “Rahwana,” the head banging “Supernateral” and the mercurial “Tribal Dance” that has more licks than a Tootsie Roll Pop. Some Hendrixy blues oozes out on “Red Mask” and clean jazz lines glide along on “Run.” Many of the tunes have exotic sound effects to add atmosphere to the strings, as in the mysterious musings during “Spirit of Java.” This is dreamy stuff for Heavy Metal Kids.
