Guitarist Ross Hammond brings together a freely expressing team of Catherine Sikora/ts, Vinny Golia/reeds-perc, Clifford Childers/brass, Kerry Kashiwagi/b and Dax Compise/dr-perc for a little under a half hour’s worth of concert music performed at the Crocker Art Museum back in 2013. The free form music is presented by Hammond’s electric guitar that allows the ensemble to build up into an expanse of chaos which includes some blaring and passionate trombone work. The theme and mood seques into a rollicking groove that falls to the wayside while Sikora’s tenor moans out a call to have the percussion develop a bluesy bop rhythm. Hammond’s guitar and Childers’ horn develop a mood that is the highlight before the percolating rhythm catapults into a cataclysmic avalanche of a close. Open nerved and white knuckling, it must have been a sight to see!
