Andrew Hadro: For Us, The Living

Andrew Hadro focuses on baritone sax with a few interludes on flute as he leads a team of Daniel Foose/b, Carmen/p and Matt Wilson/dr on a collection of modern pieces. He mixes both horns together on the dramatic “ Forever, All Ways” but for the most part keeps with the bari, as on the moody “Allegrecia” and dainty “Give.” The band knows how to go modal, as on the Coltranesque “Bright Eyes” and can get quite dramatic with multiple climaxes on the passionate title track. Staaf’s piano bops along quite merrily as well, spotlighted on “Paola” and “Cotton” while delicacy is well appreciated on “Wading the Sea.” Hadro’s tone is as rich as Ethiopian coffee-black and beautiful.
