The jazz trio takes various forms here with Jamie Saft/p-org, Steve Swallow/b and Bobby Previte/dr on this collection of originals. The interplay between the three is alarmingly symbiotic, with classic hard bop bluesies such as “Clarissa” and ”I See No Leader” as in the pocket as a Washington quarter. The drums are out in front on a lot of these pieces, such as a tympani lead “All Blue”ish sounding “Minor Soul” and a Les McCann-inspired “Step Lively.” Sounds of Procol Harum are hinted at when Saft sits behind the organ on “Clearing,” while a deep groove is dug on “Blue Shuffle” and “All Things to All People.” Swallow’s musings on the electric bass are inspiring, with some intriguing displays on “Surrender the Chaise” and the title track. Intrigue with a beat!
