Bryce Dessner & Jonny Greenwood: St Carolyn by the Sea/Suite from “There Will Be Blood”

Here’s an interesting mix of classical, jazz and rock. From the rock band The National, Bryce Dessner brings out three of his own pieces ranging from 13-17 minutes. “St. Carolyn by the Sea” includes tasteful use of electric guitar by Bryce and Aaron Dessner, with the evocative drama raising up to some passionate climaxes. “Brooding strings finally blossom and sparkle in the sun on the chiming “Lachrimae” while some dark harmonies and gentle guitars seque into stirring drums on “Raphael.”

Jonny Greenwood’s Suite from the film “There Will Be Blood” has some Stravinsky-esque chords on”Future Markets” and the strings creating some edgy buzzing bees on “Henry Plainview.” Percussive and pizzicato’d strings meld on “Proven Lands” while a calm sun rises on the closing “Oil.” Impressive 21st Century sounds.
