Brenda Earle Stokes: Right About Now

Here’s an impressive album by a vocalist you might want to pay attention to.

She hasn’t released anything for a few years, but this one should lead to more projects. She is backed by a team of Matt Aronoff/b, Jordan Perlson/dr Steve Cardenas/g and occasionally by Joel Frahm/ts on a mix of covers and originals. He voice has hint of Norah Jones, but is more crystalline and clear. The material ranges from ethereal material such as “In September” to funky pieces such as “Right About Now.” With acoustic guitar support, she pleads on “Water into Wine” and gets creative on the wordless Brazilian piece “She Sings” . Her delivery broods with Frahm on “(Meant) for You” and gets feisty on a duet with Perslon on a clever take of Cole Porter’s “Everything I Love.” Well varied and versed!
