As a doctor and a father, I have had the joy of having my daughters work for me in my office as secretaries and assistants, so I can identify with the joy of seeing one’s own offspring efficiently helping out at the job. Father John Clayton has had many musical episodes with son/pianist Gerald Clayton, but this series of duets just might be the best one. Except for the pianist’s feisty and playful “Sunny Day Go,” the mood here is lyrical and deeply melodious interplay, whether dad is bowing round the pensive ivories on Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” or both are agonizing over the themes of “Yesterdays” and “If I Should Lose You.” Their melodious take of Ellington’s “Isfahan” and the yearning “Alone Together” display alarming communications that seem to display anticipatory skills only learned through multiple meals and evenings together while growing up through the years. Anyone want to argue about the important influence of a father after listening to these tunes?!?
