Here’s another duet session that will catch your attention. This time, the unorthodox teaming of guitarist Diego Barber and pianist Craig Taborn (who’s put out some impressive stuff on his own lately) creates four tunes, ranging from almost a half hour to just over eleven, mixing wondrous interplay, lyricism and yearning passion without a nanosecond of falling into the trap of over-indulgence or over contemplation. “Killian’s Mountains” clocks in at over 27 minutes, and it goes by like that, with a Sysyphus-like climbing of a precipice just to come back down to try again. The feisty “Eternal 7” has some sparks fly, while the just under 13 minute “Cipres” is filled with sensuous passion. “Im Park” takes about half the tune for Taborn’s piano to finally hand the baton over to Barber to complete the sentence, and the phrase is worth hearing, repeating and meditating over once the thoughtful music ends.
