Mike Marshall : And The Turtle Island Quartet

Here’s a combination of strings that’s right up your alley. Mandolinist Mike Marshall teams up with the eclectic team of David Balakrishan/v, Mads Tolling/v, Jeremy Kittel/vla and Mark Summer/cel for an exciting conglomeration of sounds and visions.

The TIQ has in the past done some impressive material ranging from John Coltrane’s Love Supreme to its recent teaming with vocalist Tierney Sutton on a collection of Joni Mitchell compositions. This time around, with Marshall, they focus on a pizzicato heaven on the “Brazilian Choro Medley” as well as a four part suite titled “Interplay” which mixes dashes of Beethoven, Bartok and bluegrass to  perfection. A dreamy and exotic “Egypt” and a dancing “Loro” as well as a funky “Gator Strut” displays art and versatility, and their take of the Robert Johnson classic “Crossroads” is as foreboding as you’d ever want to get to the devil at the corner. Fun without any frets!
