Larry Coryell, Joel Harrison, Eric Reed, Sheila Jordan, etc: The Beatles-A Jazz Tribute

It was 50 years ago today…

Celebrating the songwriting skills of The Four, High Note Records got together some of the best sessions from their files and compiled them together here in one disc. It works! Lennon, McCartney and Harrison knew how to write tunes, and the material holds up well while being “jazzed” up. Guitarist Randy Johnston swings the daylight out of “Things We Said Today” while Vincent Herring’s alto sears through  the “Norwegian Wood.” A fun and funky take of “Taxman” (Is THAT an apropos song nowadays or WHAT?) has a hip horn section of Dave Liebman and David Binney, while a gentle “Something” is caressed by Larry Coryell. Shelia Jordan  and Steve Kuhn make some wonderful moments out of “Little Song/Blackbird” and a delicate “In My Life” has Wesla Whitfield making you beg for more.  So successful, maybe they could cover Gerry and the Pacemakers!
