Offiong Bassey is a double threat, as not only does she posses an attractively rich voice on this R&B meets jazz session, but she shows gobs of talent as a songwriter as well. Sounds from the church, Peru, West Africa and the urban streets mix together like a flavorful sauce as she sings about empowerment on the optimistic “Legitimate Child” or the issues of men and women on “Mistaking Chivalry for Chauvinism.” More traditional sounds flow forth excitedly on “Owo Iba Me Ita” and “Ebidem” which sound completely uncontrived from the daughter of Nigerian parents. Fresh sounds with sparks flying make this a catch for soul fans.
