Indian violinist Nistha Raj does an impressive job here mixing Central Asian sounds and harmonies with jazz sensibilities and lyricism. Each track has a different mix of instrumental combinations, going from traditional folk to mainstream jazz without any time travel or jet lag. She teams up with violinist Anque Xue and tabla master Debu Kayak on “From China to India” that melds conversing and sing song lyricism with festive percussion, while a piano trio backs up the leader on a melodically swinging “Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai.” Her violin yearns with no accompaniment on the wondrous “Gravity”, having her rich tone fill your ears, while the gentel theam of “Ajde Jano” combines tabla and guitar with the leader’s strings to sound like a combination of Northern India and the Blue Ridge Mountains. A welcome mix of spices and sounds.
