Looking for a new guitarist to discover? Here’s a guy from the Bay Area that might be your find. Terrence Brewster’s got a tensile tone, doesn’t waste a note, and has a healthy sense of swing and timing on these two discs.
The first one, subtitled Setting The Standard: Volume Two has him in the company of Jarrett Cherner/p, Gabe Davis/b and Lorca Hart/dr. They go through jazz standards with aplomb, ranging from a slightly latin and sly “I Remember You’ to a sizzling “Oleo.” Cherner displays his wares on “Children of the Night,” while the funky jazz groove of “Bossa Rokka” is an infectious romp for the whole rhythm team. Brewer knows how to build up a solo, going from calm, patient and gentle on “All the Things You Are” to a climactic solo that explodes like a firecracker. Good outing!
On Mi Historia, Brewer works with Andy Ostwald/p, Doug Ebert/b and Kelly Fasman/dr-perc through some latin covers and originals. “The Girl From Faifua” and “Shut Up and Play” have Brewer’s #2 pencil thin tone sauntering through the sensuous beat, while he gives a coy treatment in unison with Ostwald on “The Girl From Ipanema.” The driving ”Ten Years and Counting” focuses on Brewer’s clean delivery while Ostwald and Brewer team up like dance partners on a pair of luminous duets, “If You Never Dome To Me” and “Samba De Orfeu.” This stuff’s gonna get ya!
