Drummer Rudy Royston leads from behind a team of Sam Harris/p, Yasushi Nakamura-Mimi Jones/b, Jon Irabagon/sax, Nadja Noordhuis/tp and Nir Felder/g on a collection of originals, indie rock and classical. Of the former, there are some fast and tricky bop lines and hairpin turns handled well by the horns on “Play On Words” while Felder’s tensile guitar is visceral on “Goodnight Kinyah.” Deep grooves are created by the rhythm section and are served well by the long tones of the horn on a couple of tunes, contrasting well and creating an exciting tension on “Miles to Go” and “Gangs of New York.” Radiohead’s “High and Dry” is achingly somber and delicate and Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” glows with pensive harmonies. Well created post bop.
