Here’s a guy with a guitar in a format you’re gonna love. Joshua Breakstone has a wonderfully lyrical sound to his axe and can make it flow like water or burn like a forest fire. What makes this session so enjoyable is that he presents the music in two formats of this bop-centered release. The first, a trio with Lisle Atkinson/b and Eliot Zigmund/dr is pretty standard in construction and gives a lot of space for Breakstone to show his chops as on Kenny Dorham’s “La Villa” and his delicate touch, delivered during “The Very Thought of You.” What ups the ante is when he brings cellist Mike Richmond into the fold; the extra texture as well as mid range sounds provides a wonderful balance between bass and guitar. “Some Kinda Mean” is a rhythmic delight, with the cello snapping like snow peas, while “La Verne Walk” bounces like a Super Ball. Lots of solo space, but never over indulgent, and the various layers of string make it sound almost three dimensional. A real treat!
