Here’s a two cd set that takes the bel canto Mr. Bennett at two complete bookends of his career. Disc one has him pre-“San Francisco” and at the peak of his first apotheosis, while the second cd features him in a Baker’s Dozen duets from recent times. It’s hard to compare vintage takes of “Just In Time,” “The Good Life” and “If I Ruled The World” with duets of “Steppin’ Out” with Christina Aguilera. But the fact is, Bennett makes artists such as k.d. lang, the late Amy Winehouse and even Lady Gaga turn into bona fide hip jazz divas, if even for only one song. This just might surprise you! Give it a shot, if you’re uninitiated and open minded!
