BEAUTY FROM BRAZIL… Toninho Ferragutti: O Sorriso Da Manu

No, not THAT kind of beauty! Toninho Ferraguti playes accordion and writes all of the wonderfully lovely music on this release that mixes passionate moods with lyrical melodies. The instrument mix makes for a flexible collection of sounds and moods; besides Ferragutti, a four piece string section augments the team of clarinet (Alexandre Ribeiro), piano (Paulo Braga), percussion (Beto Angerosa) and percussion (Ze Alexandre Carvalho). The mix of accordion and strings, along with the dancing clarinet make material such as  “Circuleta” and “Nova” seem both celebratory and sensual, while thoughtful musings with pizzicato strings mixed with gentle bows on “Trilha Feita A Lapis” and “Trilah Feita A Lapis” are balms of gracefulness. A bit of klezmer sounds from Eastern Europe sneak in on “O Sorriso Da Manu” and a mysterious hint of Bartok flows with strings and clarinet on”Chor Da Madrugada.” Dreamy, festive and romantic-what more could you want?
