If you’re looking for your next post bop disc, here’s a great find. Tenor saxist Anton Schwartz has a warm and beefy sound not unlike Hank Mobley, and he forms a glistening front line with radiantly toned trumpeter Dominick Farinacci and an air tight rhythm team of Taylor Eigsti/p, John Shifflett/b and Lorca Hart/dr through a mix of originals and covers . Some exciting and tricky tunes like “Flash Mob,” and “Cumulonimbus” have some sophisticated lines by the horns that are still able to swing, with Hart’s drumming bustling underneath. Farinacci’s horn is incandescent on the lazy blues “Swamp Thang” as well as when he mutes it on Kenny Dorham’s lonely ballad “La Mesha.” Eigsti is creative and flexigle the whole session, and lays himself out in the open with a gorgeous duet with the leader on the closing duet “Dawn Song”. Music that is fun, feisty, formidable and still forward looking.
