Bernie Worrell Orchestra: BWO Is Landing

Keyboardist Bernie Worrell made  his name working with Parlaiment-Funkadelic when an Afro was an Afro. Here, with disco behind him by a good 20 years, he leads a funky ten piece band that sounds like a modern version of rhythmic R&B/Jazz outfits like Tower of Power and The Sons of Champlain. Hip vocals are supported by punctuated horn play ers Shlomi Chohen/as, Ofer Assaf/ts and Justin Mullens/tp on tunes like “So Uptight,” while a relentlessly snapping rhythm section of Scott Hogan/b, Glen Fittin/perc and Evan Taylor/dr cruises like a souped-up lowrider on “Moneypenny” and “Double W” which also includes some elastic bass by Mike Watt. Festivity is the name here, and these guys play with fun and funk.
