Ted Rosenthal Trio: Wonderland

Here’s a trio that takes its Christmas songs seriously. Ted Rosenthal/p, Noriko Ueda/b and Tim Horner/dr go through the Natal catalogue of standard fare, but with a lot of thought and preparation. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” has a Blue Monkish tinge, while Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Reed Flutes” has a Caribbean lilt. The band bops like Bud Powell on “Angels We Have Heard on High” and they jaunt through a “Winter Wonderland” and “Let It Snow” with a vigorous stride. You’ll have your ears  perked up on this one.
