Pentultima: Snow Paws

If you’re longing for the days when rock and pop sounded at least halfway intelligent and optimistic, this Australian group lead by Lu Ruello might be right up your alley. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a non-country/bluegrass band deal with vocal harmonies, but there are plenty here, and they work marvelously on upbeat tunes such as “For You” and “Teach Yourself.” A few of the pieces are more  pop than rock, such as “Hang Onto Love” which has some strings and piano framing the intelligent and thoughtful lyrics. Some light metal guitars ring out some licks on “Black Cat Blues” and “Go at it Right” while some pan flutes coalesce perfectly with the rock steady groove on “Crystal Morning.” I forgot that rock and  pop could actually be inspiring and not need the listener to take a shower after  a couple listenings. Encouraging!
