Dave Sharp’s Secret Seven: Worlds

Bassist/composer Dave Sharp has a good attitude about his music, as he describes his style as “World Jazz for the Jazz World.” Truth in advertising here, as Sharp and his team of  Chris Kaercher-Dan Bennet/sax, Elden Kelly/g, Bill higggins/dr, John Churchville/perc, Ross Huff/fh, Gary Schunk/p and Jay Antani/table take the sensibilities of jazz and mix them with sounds from Africa, the Caribbean, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Sharp’s lithe and loose bass sets some lively grooves on the festive Afro/Cuban “Sherehe” as well as on the sleek yet galloping “Mystery Blues” that includes some wondrous Central Asia percussion. Middle Eastern and Greek sounds meld to exotic delight on the mysterious “ Sunrise” while some funky Average White Band horns get you dancing on “Nu Africa.” Meditative and nasally Indian vocals provided by guest Parthiv Gohil add atmosphere to the ruminating “Easter Flame” and caravan like “Eastern Flame.” It’s encouraging to see how these sounds from all over the world can translate well into the jazz language and vice versa.
