TWELVE STRINGS OF JOY…Frank Potenza: For Joe

If you don’t live in LA, and have ever wondered what a Tuesday Guitar Night with veteran John Pisano is like, this sumptuous session lead by Frank Potenza is an excellent hint at what your missing. Potenza gets together LA studs Jim Hughart/b, Colin Bailey/dr and  Pisano himself for a wonderful tribute to six stringed master Joe Pass. The album is actually reminiscent of Pisano’s old recordings with Billy Bean and even going back to his days when he was the supporting guitarist for Pass himself.

Tasty and swinging tunes by Pass himself such as “For Django” “Catch Me” and “A Foxy Chick and a Cool Cat” deliver deft interplay between the fretters, while a remarkably blues take of “Due Nothin’ ‘til You Hear From Me” feature tones bent so far that you’ll need a chiropractor to straighten them out. Deft conversations of sages take place on “Rosetta” and “Love is Here To Stay,” and the lilt on “Beautiful Love” will melt your heart. This is what a guitar was made for!
