Is it “smooth”? Is it “contemporary jazz”? I’m not sure what you can label it, but tenor saxist Steve Cole has a rich and warm tenor on this collection of ten tunes written by either himself, the sax player and flutist David Mann or Jerry Peters. The front line of two horns along with Trevor Newman’s trumpet and Dan Levine’s trombone give a lot of life to the synth bass and rhythm programming provided by Nicholas Cole on a number of the tunes. Bernd Schoenhart/g, Kari Parker/dr, Ricky Peterson/B3 and Paul Peterson/b give a more organic feel on material like “With You All The Way” and “Looking Up,” but either way, Cole’s gonna impress you with his round tone and expressive dynamics.
