OLD SCHOOL NEVER SOUNDED SO GOOD…Jeff Golub with Brian Auger: Train Keeps a Rolling

Put together a couple of old coots that rocked and boogied back when Republicans were in the White House, throw in some tunes that range from 50s jazz soul to modern reggae, and add a dash of top flight studio studs and you get a hefty meal of a disc that you’ll want to take out, eat in, or munch while you’re in the truck. Guitarist Jeff Golub, who released a cooking tribute to blues legends BB, Freddie and Albert King a couple years ago, gets together with keyboard legend Brian Auger (didn’t his Oblivion Express back up EVERYONE back in the 70s?) and hipsters/alumni Steve Ferone/dr, Derek Frank/b, Luis Conte/erc along with a snapping horn section with even vocalists Christopher Cross, David Pack and Alex Ligertwood throwing some vocals in between shows at state fairs. Ya gotta love this setup!

First, the attitude-LET’S BOOGIE!!! Hip instrumental like Lalo Schifrin’s “The Cat” and Curtis Mayfield’s “The Pusher” have more soul in their right pinky than 90% of what you hear these days outside of a Booker T Jones session. Classis Oblivion Express tunes like “Happiness is Just Around The Bend” and “Whenever You’re Ready” will get your motor running, while that chestnut roasting by an open fire, “How Long” with Cross sounds fresher today than yesterday, and half as much as tomorrow. And of course, you’re gonna want the blues; how can you go wrong with a finger frying take of Willie Dixon’s “I Love The Life I  Live”? Somebody save me from myself-I can’t stop playing “Repeat” on my cd player!!!!
