Last year, vocalist Kathy Kosins released a hot (or should I say “cool”) disc dedicated to the Ladies of Cool such as Peggy Lee. This time around, she brings together some of LA’s best artists (Tamir Hendelman/p, Bob Hurst/b, Eric Harland/dr, Larry Koonse/g) for a collection of tunes that go more towards the soul and R&B side of jazz. Her take of “Drowning in a Sea of Love” as well as Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father” show Kosins displaying a bit more muscle than before. She shows a bit of an adventurous spirit by staying away from the standard standards; Steve Allen’s “Spring is Where You Are” deserves more attention, and where’s she find the intriguing “You were Only Passing By”? Nice calls. A couple bonus tracks include a live gig with a bit of extra pizzaz as well. Good show, lady!
