Well, there’s “mellow,” and then there’s “James Taylor Mellow.”A completely different category in itself. I’ve never personally understood it, but almost every woman I know thinks that James Taylor is the embodiment of the “M” word the same way that Miles Davis is “Cool” to every guy. This two cd set has everything that you’ll ever want by the singer songwriter that has looked and sounded avuncular since kindergarten. Lots of thoughtful pieces such as “Fire and Rain” and “You’ve Got A Friend” made fans in the early 70s, while “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” was the apotheosis of the “sensitive soul” that Taylor exudes. Included here are some duets as well; most successful is with JD Souther (of “You’re Only Lonely” fame) on “Her Town Too” and some concert material has him wooing the crowd with his winsome gentleness. This guy could put Ether to sleep! Someone once asked Glenn Frey the difference between “mellow” and “boring.” His replay was apropos, “About a million bucks.”
