Peter Leitch Quartet: California Concert

Well, the bad news about this disc is that two of the musicians that recorded on this concert at Cal State University, Fresno back in 1999 are no longer with us, so you can’t enjoy the sounds of tasteful artists like drummer Billy Higgins or pianist John Hicks anymore. The good news is that at least we’ve got one more chance to hear them, and their work on this gig lead by equally impressive guitarist Peter Leitch and supported by bassist David Williams. The six tunes stretch from about 10-14 minutes, so everyone gets a chance to breath a bit. While the recording quality is just a tad above low fidelity, the music itself is vibrant and surround sound. Leitch’s linear lines are the epitome of taste, swing and style on a cooking take of “Book’s Bossa” and lovingly lyrical on “In A Sentimental Mood/Warm Valley.” Hicks, a member of GIPP (Genetically Impossible to Play Poorly) is his customarily gracious self on a hot “Relaxin’ at Camarillo” and thoughtful “Isfahan” whereas you can feel Higgins’ smile as he joyfully drives the band throughout, particularly on the celebratory closing “A Blues for Ivan Symonds/Theme.” Wish I could’ve been there.
