Jeri Brown: Echoes

Here’s a singer that’s got something to say! Caught  in concert at Catalina’s Jazz Club right here in Hollywood, Jeri Brown and her team of Woody Woods/p, Trevor Ware/b and Clayton Cameron/b  deliver an excitingly extroverted set of originals and jazz standards in ways that are anything BUT standard.

Brown’s got a declatory quality to her delivery that is robust and cleansing like a flame thrower. Her take of a piece like “The Look of Love” is the anti-matter to the coolness of a Diana Krall. This lady is filled with vinegar. A soulful sturt comes into play on “The Nearness of You” and her reading of “I Got Rhythm” is reminiscent of the Classic Coltrane Quartet. Vocalist Mon David jumps on stage for a handful of wordless vocals, with a take of “All The Things You Are” almost overwhelming and a scat during her own“Echo Thoughts” filled with buccinators induced percussion. Both get feisty and funky on “I Thought About You” with an avalanche of rhythm cascading down on “Afro Blue.” A dvd is also included as you really do have to see this to believe it!
