Here’s an interesting tale, bassist of over 30 years Howard Britz decided to learn the piano, and leads here an impressive trio on a mix of well written originals and swinging standards. He’s got an incessant feel of swing on his pieces like his own “Sunday Song” and lays down a hip groove on Ellington’s title track. He’s got a nice sense of stride as he opens unaccompanied on the playful take of “Monk’s Dream,” yet when Donny McCaslin brings in his tenor for a couple of tunes, the material and interplay gets a lot more sophisticated. Clever and intricate lines are observable on “Lifetime” and “Fifty Seven Varieties” as McCaslin’s beefy tenor brings an extra prismatic collection of colors. A winner in either incarnation. Give this guy a try.
