Dave Holland puts together a team of all stars here with Kevin Eubanks/g, Craig Taborn/p-key and Eric Harland/dr. Everyone contributes material and everyone DEFINITELY contributes assertive chops, as this band displays more muscles than Gold’s Gym. Funky grooves on “The Watcher” turn into a Hendrix-like blues on “The Empty Chair.” This is the guy that was a key guitarist on the smooth jazz scene? WHEW! Even deeper into the dark abyss we go with “The Color of Iris” before Holland brings his bass up front for the intro to a piece of musical prestidigitation on the complex lines of “The True Meaning of Determination.” Some exhalation occurs on the lovely ballad “Breathe” which gives Taborn a chance to use the acoustic piano for a bit, let the album settle down after a wondrous and rocking roller coaster of a ride. Lots of excitement here!
