Western Africa pop music got real popular in the States back in the early 80s. This collection of 13 rare tracks from Ghana-based bands are vintage 70s material. The various and sundry singers and bands range from well known singers such a s K. Frimpong, Afrobeat star Ebo Taylor and less known artists such as Waza Africa 76 and Los Issufu and his Moslems (one of the better names for a band). Most of the songs themselves are filled with crisp horns and a funky back beat. A few of them have a Farfisa-sounding organ lurking in the background as well. Most of the time, you can’t help but think this is how Stax records would have sounded if they were based in Accra instead of Memphis, as the sweaty beat and crisp saxes serve as a hot little backdrop for some exciting grooves. The themes range from the political “Children Don’t Cry” to a closing prayer to God. The music and messages cut to the quick. Good vibes!
