Mezzo tenor vocalist Ron Boustead puts together a mix of mainstream and smooth jazz tunes with some of the best gents in town. Bill Cantos/p, Brian Bromberg/dr, Rick Braun/tp, Kirk Whalum/sax, Bill Cunliffe/p, Fred Hersch/p and Pat Kelley/g are just a handful of the capable gents on this highly listenable charmer. Radio friendly pieces like “Moon Song” highlight Boustead’s honey toned voice, while the Brazilian “Careless Wind” displays his taste with tempos and rhythm. James Tayler’s soft and velvety “Secret ‘O Live” melds his impressive interpretation of lyrics with gracious piano and strings, while Bill Withers’ “Whatever Happens’ has a rich soulful lilt. Nice to see a male vocalist in a crowd dominated by skirts these days.
