Do we really need another reading of Cole Porter’s songbook? Well, if it’s done like this, we’ll welcome it in. Guitarist/vocalist Perry Beekman delivers a low key and cozy sample of well known, and, Thank God, more obscure Porter compositions. His simpatico team of Peter Tomlinson/p and Lou Pappas/b keep the mood understated, which works perfectly for getting the most out of the clever and witty Port lyrics. Takes of “So In Love” and the under performed “I Happen to Like New York” are overlooked prizes, while his sly readings of “Let’s Do It” and “Let’s Misbehave” are both naughty and nice. A couple instrumentals keep the jazz vibe alive, with “Always True to My Fashion” making you wonder why no one else has brought this tune to the forefront. Beekman’s guitar licks and vocals are both clean and rich, making material like “Anything Goes” and “You’re the Top” true joys. Give the guy a listen!
