If your idea of heaven is the Atomic Basie band, this latest release by Michael Treni is going to be right up your alley. The trombone/bandleader has a 16 piece team that swings like their out at the Daisy Chain on this collection that includes tenorist Jerry Bergonzi, who burns on the opening “One For Duke.” The emphasis here is to delve into various shades of the blues on each song, and the rhythm section sizzles all throughout, particularly on “Blues in Triplicate” and “Summer Blues” which features Freddie Hendrix’s potent trumpet. Treni leads a snapping horn section that supplies the riffs like on the “BQE Blues” as well as call and responses as on the brassy “Mr. Funky Blues” that will get your neck in a supple mood within 8 bars.
