Here’s a vocalist with a lot of great ideas, taking songs we all know and goosing them up a bit, as well as writing a few clever pieces of her own. Deborah Katz uses her behind the beat vocals with a core team of Jon Davis/p, John Hart/g and Willard Dyson/dr-perc on a lonely hearted “Moon Riiver” as well as chamber mooded “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To.” Her elastic reading of “Hi-Fly” has some gorgeous interplay with Davis, while guest Peter Apfelbaum brings in his tenor sax for “You Are.” Her timing is spot on during the R&B ish “I’m Having A Good Time,” but what will win you over is her blue waltzy title track, an impressionistic reading of “S’Wonderful,” and then the ringer of a Greek lyric on “Fevgo.” Greek jazz?!? Opa! Ideas bounce around all over the place on this winner.
