Pianist Pascal Le Boeuf displays two sides of his brain on this pair of recently released sessions
Pascal’s Triangle has the pianist in a traditional trio format with Linda Oh/b and Justin Brown/dr. The original songs are all 2-4 minute conceptions, so the emphasis is on melody and arrangement as opposed to pyrotechnic and soloing chops. Songs like “Home in Strange Places” have an elliptical ruminating quality, while “Jesse Holds Louise” has hints of Satie on the playful ivories. A probing ballad like “Variations of a Mood” contrasts well with the active energy of “What Your Teacher” with its percussive joy. A definite reflection of style over technique here.
The Remixed disc has Pascal with his brother Remy, who plays woodwinds and Rhodes on this collection of pop synth originals. Some of the pieces are reminiscent of Imogen Heap, particularly when Genevieve Artadi brings up some willowy vocals. Here, the emphasis is on creating and indie pop mood, leaving much for the pop fan, but not too much for the jazzer. Still, the concept itself is quite impressive
