Pianist Stefano Battaglia fronts a trio with Salvatore Maiore/b and Roberto Dani/dr through a collection of songs that come across as almost mystical chants. A brooding “Euphonia Elegy” slowly builds up for 12 minutes like a prayer that stacks one supplication after another, while “Monte Analogo” floats like a mist over a pasture. Material like “Mildendo Wide Song” and “Ismaro” are taken from imaginary cities of literature such as Jonathon Swift, and the themes have an ruminating and daydreaming quality about them. Battaglia’s touch is warm and yet direct, while the teammates provide interplay and responsive commentary. Well delivered for a pensive evening.
