Stan Killian: Evoke

Tenor Saxist and composer Stan Killian fronts a well rounded post bop quintet with Mike Moreno/g, Benito Gonzalez/p, Corcoran Holt and McClenty Hunter on this collection of well constructed and arranged originals. Arrangement is an important thing here, as the sanded down toned tenorist doesn’t let this session dissolute into a simple “blow and go” encounter. Pieces like “ Subterranean Melody” and “Observation” mix intricate melodies with energetic and almost rhapsodic climaxes and releases, serving as a framework for the well crafted and never over indulgent solos. The hyperactive “Kirby” includes some linear string work by Moreno, while the “Killer Joe”ish groove of “Beekman” has an infectious strut for the leader’s tenor to wrangle with. The delightful title track mixes piano and guitar voicings in a way that resembles Japanese folk music, while “Echolalic” has Moreno’s notes resemble droplets of dew. Well thought out and delivered. Satisfying like a 4 course meal.
