If nothing else, Grammy winning pianist/composer Michel Camilo is known for his exciting and expressive chops. He’s used them most often in a trio format, but he’s also been successful in doing orchestral works of Gershwin. He’s also done a solo release here and there, but this one might be his best. He mixes romantic and fervent originals with standards here, and the mix coalesces into a perfectly tasting sauce. He produces a playful and striding boogie on the title track as well as a sensuous salsa on “Paprika.” A spry reading of “Take Five” contrasts with a bluesy and bel canto “Alone Together,” all the while mixing restrained latin passion with exuberant finger work that begs to burst out of the reins. The best mix of these two worlds is displayed on “Sandra’s Serenade” and “Island Beat” which tear at your heart but grab at your feat. Soulful ivories!
