Lucian Ban & Mat Maneri: Transylvanian Concert

A modern collection of sonatas that erase the lines between jazz and classical is presented in concert form here by Romanian-born composer and pianist Lucian Ban and Ameican violist Mat Maneri. A mixture of Eastern Europe, American blues and even gospel is touched during these free flowing semi-improvisations. “Nobody Knows the Troubles I’ve Seen” has the two artists slip and slide through the theme, while the undulating “Not That Kind of Blues” sighs and moans with deep resignation. Keeping with the meditative mood is “Two Hymns” that make the melding of sounds similar to a modern liturgy. Ruminating and reflective, yet keeping your interest.
