Various Artists: Reason to Believe-The Songs of Tim Hardin

I’m sure almost everyone that is reading this that is over 40 is familiar with at least a couple of Tim Hardin’s compositions, most notably “Reason to Believe” and “if I Were A Carpenter.” These two and eleven more are covered by various artists like Gavin Clark, Alela Dian and bands like “The Magnetic North and The Sand Band. Many of the songs are fairly straight ahead country and western renditions, such as “It’ll Never Happen Again” by Okkervil River.” Many others, such as “Part of the Wind” or “Part of the Wind” have eerie keyboards or effects that go along with the haunting voices. As far as the aforementioned classics, it feels like sound and atmosphere prevailed over emotions, as there is a palpable disconnect between the lyrics and the delivery, something that is all too common with this present generation of vocalists.
