Tenor saxist Dann Zinn mixes an old school leather tone with just a hint of modal moaning on this intriguing quartet collection with Taylor Eigsti/p, John Shifflett/b and Alan Hall/dr. Mixing originals with a couple intriguing covers. A song like “Western Skies” has an Impulse era Coltrane feel, with Eigsti’s full throttled piano propulsion evoking sonic images of Tyner, while Zinn overdubs some saxes before delving into some serious soloing. Shifflett’s bass plays a major role in the rhythmically intense “Corazon” while Zinn’s tone gets as thick and rich as molasses on the standard “Stardust.” A rumbling and melancholy “King of Pain” has Zinn using Sting’s composition with some intriguing voices, while a gospel-tinged and bluesy title track shows yet another side of this guy’s Selmer. Zinn’s got a lot to say, and he uses a good language to convey it.
