Halle & The Jilt: Three Roads Home

Vocalist/composer Halle Petro fronts a bluesy/rock team of Michael Gomez/g, Tim Luntzel/b and Jon Wert through a collection of material that delivers rootsy music not dissimilar to what Bonnie Raitt used to deliver. Petro has an attractively husky voice with an earthy delivery. She can deliver STAX influence R&B such as “Confessions” and make is sound convincing. The air tight band can go to late night funk (“Kiss My Ghost” & “Jam”) to spooky blues (“Graveyard of the Ocean”). Halle herself sounds like she means it as she delivers folks tales on “Wayfaring Stranger” to stories of forgiveness and acceptance. A bit of the folk minstrel comes out here and there, such as on “Signs” taking you back to an era when a singer and band performed a wide variety of material that still contained the same meaty pulp no matter what.
